White Fire

The White Fire started on 27 May 2013 at the White Rock day use area just beyond Paradise Campground off Paradise Rd. About 1900 acres burned north of the Santa Ynez river. It was contained by the end of the month.

I visited the edge of the fire (between lower and upper Oso) on 22 Mar 2014. The hillsides were very barren.

Species observed growing:

  • Chaparral Mallow — apparently growing from rootstock
  • White sage — apparently growing from rootstock
  • Sawtoothed goldenbush — growing on slope, if from rootstock then everything above ground had burnt up.
  • Mustard — probably black mustard
