This bird was introduced into California starting in 1877, however there is some evidence that they originally lived in northern California up until about 10,000 years ago when it when extinct at about the same time that humans arrived in the area. At that time there was also a different species in southern California (M. californica) which also became extinct. Thus the species is probably native to California, but not SB — though the genus is probably native to the area…
