Lupinus albifrons

Lupinus albifrons flowerSilver lupine.

This is a woody shrub of a lupine. I’ve seen it up on Camino Cielo, and on the backside of the front range trails.

I’ve seen silver lupine blooming between March and August.

This species is said to intergrade with Dune Lupine (L. chamissonis) from which I cannot distinguish it. (I pretend to do so based on its location: Down by the coast it’s a Dune Lupine, up in the hills it’s Silver).

In about November the leaves become very silvery, this fades over the course of the winter and by the time it starts blooming in March it often looks much like any other lupine.
