Eschscholzia californica

Wildflowers Dicots Ranunculales Papaveraceae Eschscholzia

California poppy.

I’ve never seen this on the front-country trails (nor in the proximate back-country). It does grow wild on Figuroa Mtn. It is planted all over town, of course, and I have seen it on both More Mesa and Elwood Mesa.

The bloom is usually orange (though the color is variable) and there is a collar, a ring, underneath the flower.

California poppies have a collar below the bloom
