Xanthium spinosum

Wildflowers Dicots Eudicots Asterids Asterales Asteraceae Heliantheae Ambrosiinae Xanthium

Spiny Clotspur.

Found on Jesusita trail just after the stream crossing near Cator between Cator and Steven’s park. It’s congener, cocklebur, actually grows in the creek. The two may be distinguished by their leaves — the leaves of this plant are longer and thinner than those of Cocklebur.

I noticed it blooming in September 2011 (but before that I assumed it was cocklebur, and it probably bloomed earlier).
